Limits of Control (dir. Jim Jarmusch. 2009)
Jim Jarmusch was one of my first (film) loves. I still think of his earliest films fondly. I maintain that he’s a nice stepping stone to European art/intellectual cinema for a teenager but I haven’t counted Jarmusch as one of my favourite directors in years.
I first saw Limits of Control at the London Film Festival in 2009. I thought it was repetitive and dull. A disappointment.
Due to the nature of the film; a) few people have/will see it b) even fewer people like it c) even fewer again understand the message.
Personally I think it feels like the most lethargic call to arms. Art/music/cinema is good. Do not lose your focus (no sex). Use your imagination to kill Bill/America/Capitalism.
Chris Doyle’s photography is stunning (duh). Paz’s lop-sized boobs are curious.
Is this Jarmusch’s most boring film?
What do you think?
Jim Jarmusch was one of my first film loves too, and along with Harmony Korine they both made films which broke my heart. Jarmusch with Broken Flowers and Korine with Mister Lonely (tears were shed). It was a long time before I saw Limits of Control as I was expecting the worst, but I think mainly because of Isaach De Bankole’s performance (and trying to ignore that Tilda Swinton was in it) I thought it was a return to form, or at least a return to what I first loved about his films. However, I am not hopeful about his Tilda Swinton starring vampire project.

Anyway, I vote Broken Flowers as his most boring film. A journey and characters I really couldn’t care less about.
And Harmony Korine won me back with Trash Humpers.
